Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing

The other day, I had the opportunity to hear Bob Goff speak. For those of you who don’t know Bob, he’s the author of one of my favorite books, “Love Does.” (If you haven’t read it, check it out!) Bob has a lot of energy and is a great storyteller. It was awesome to experience him in person.

The Main Thing

One of the things I took away from Bob’s talk is that he keeps the main thing the main thing. Christianity can seem really complicated nowadays. There is a lot of arguing and division. Bob has an uncanny ability to see through to the core of our faith. He’s all about loving God and loving people. That’s pretty much it.

Switzerland

He doesn’t get bogged down in arguments about theology. He said, “I’m Switzerland. I don’t want to argue about Jesus or theology.”

Off-Course

It’s an interesting point. I think as Christians, we often get distracted. We waste time and energy arguing about things that are outside our core purpose, which I believe is to love God and love others. When we get off-course, we begin to look less and less like Jesus.

Back to Love

Next time you are in an argument with someone about religion or theology, press the pause button. Is this argument hurting your ability to love the person you are talking with? If so, stop the argument. It’s not worth it! Redirect your energy from the argument toward loving the person you are engaged with. Keep the main thing the main thing, and let the rest of it go.
